Google Business Profile Changes in October 2026: What Builders Should Do

Google Business Profile changes give you four days to reject edits and now need sign-in to read reviews. Here is what builders should do.

Google Business Profile changes for construction companies

Google changed two things about Business Profiles in late September 2026. Both affect any builder who uses Google Maps to win local work.

The details come from Search Engine Roundtable’s reports. So this guide explains what changed and what to do this week.

First, a note. Google may adjust these rules again, so check its help pages for the latest wording.

Change 1: Four Days to Reject Suggested Edits

On 23 September, Google updated its help page about suggested edits. Here is what it now says:

  • Google may email you, or notify you in the product, about a suggested edit.
  • You then have 4 days to accept or reject it.
  • If you do not respond, Google may publish the edit automatically when other public information supports it, such as your website.
  • Some edits may go live without any review, when they must meet policy guidelines.

So a wrong phone number or opening time can go live while you are on site. That can cost you calls.

Change 2: Sign-In Now Needed to Read All Reviews

On 30 September, Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google Maps asks people to sign in to read all reviews on a listing. Sign-in is also required to sort reviews and to leave one.

The report guesses that Google wants to stop bots and scrapers. But that is an assumption, not a Google statement.

For you, the main effect is one extra step for clients. Also, they must sign in before they can review you.

What to Do This Week

  1. Check your alert email. Make sure Google’s notices reach an inbox someone reads daily.
  2. Review your details. Confirm your name, phone, hours, categories and service area.
  3. Match your website. Google can publish edits that other public sources support, so keep your site accurate.
  4. Change your review request. Send a direct link, and ask clients to sign in to Google first.
  5. Set a reminder. Open your profile twice a week, because the window lasts only four days.

Why Consistent Details Matter

Because Google may trust public sources, your website, directories and profile should say the same thing. For example, our guide to schema markup for construction companies shows how to keep details consistent.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I ignore a suggested edit?

After four days, Google may publish it automatically if other public information supports it. Some edits may go live without review.

Why does Google Maps ask me to sign in to read reviews?

Google Maps now asks for sign-in to read all reviews, sort them or leave one. Search Engine Roundtable guesses the aim is to limit scraping, but that is its assumption.

Do clients need a Google account to leave a review?

Yes. Clients must sign in to leave a review, so send a direct link and ask them to sign in first.

How often should I check my profile?

Check at least twice a week, because the suggested-edit window lasts only four days. Also keep alert emails going to a monitored inbox.
