Google Ranking Volatility in October 2026: Why Your Rank Tracker May Be Wrong
Google ranking volatility spiked on 16 October, and rank trackers may be unreliable. See what builders should check instead.

Search Engine Roundtable reported a spike in Google ranking volatility and chatter on 16 October 2026. Site owners also mentioned changes in referral traffic.
However, the data is messy. Third-party rank trackers are struggling, so their charts may mislead you. This guide explains why, and what to check instead.
First, a note. Google has not confirmed an update, so treat this as unconfirmed.
What Was Reported
- On 16 October, Search Engine Roundtable saw a spike in volatility and chatter over 24 hours.
- Some tracking tools showed volatility too, but the report warns that the tools are struggling.
- The spike came about a week after the September spam update finished, according to HighDegree.
Because of this, treat any single-day chart with caution. For background, read our guide to the September 2026 spam update.
Why Rank Trackers May Be Wrong
Nozzle’s Derek Perkins told Search Engine Roundtable that Google uses three tactics against scrapers:
- Wide IP blocking that targets residential proxy networks.
- A big rise in captchas.
- Bad data injected into suspect result pages.
Nozzle also studied 27.5 million result pages across 49 countries. On affected pages, results kept only 20.7% of the previous sites, against 88.5% normally, according to HighDegree. Also, AI Overviews appeared on 35% of affected pages against 54% normally, according to Mumbrella.
So a sudden dip in a tool may be false data. Nozzle sells rank tracking, so treat these figures as one source.
What to Check Instead
- Open Search Console, because its data comes from Google directly.
- Use the country filter to view the UK, US and Canada separately. Search Console added a multi-select country filter, reported on 6 October.
- Wait a week, then compare clicks and impressions before and after 15 October.
- Check which pages moved, not just the site total.
- Track real outcomes, such as calls, form enquiries and WhatsApp messages.
Mumbrella makes the same point: the only data Google cannot poison is the data it gives you directly, such as Search Console and your analytics.
Also keep a simple weekly log of clicks, impressions and enquiries, because a trend tells you more than one noisy day. Real enquiries matter most. Our guide to getting more enquiries from your construction website shows how to track them.
What Not to Do
- Never rewrite pages because one tool shows a dip.
- Avoid changing titles and URLs in a panic, because changes can cause their own dip.
- Skip buying a new tool as a quick fix.
Instead, wait for a clear signal. Our guide to URL slugs for builders explains when a change is worth making.
