Google Business Profile Messaging: What Builders Should Do About Messenger, WhatsApp and Text

Google Business Profile messaging is changing: Messenger links are being added. See how builders should pick one channel and reply fast.

Messaging a builder from a phone through a Google Business Profile

Google is now adding Facebook Messenger chat links to some Business Profiles. Search Engine Roundtable reported the change on 28 October 2026. Google is emailing the businesses it affects.

So builders now face a simple question. Which messaging channel should your profile show? This guide explains what changed and how to choose. First, a note. This looks like a rollout to some profiles, so your own profile may not show it yet.

What Google Changed

  • Google emailed businesses to say it is automatically adding Messenger m.me links to their profiles.
  • Darcy Burk shared the email on X and asked whether others were getting the same message.
  • An m.me link is a short Meta URL. It opens a direct chat with a Facebook Page in Messenger.
  • Search Engine Roundtable says it had not seen Google add m.me links before, so this may be new.

Google has also started asking some US businesses for an Employer Identification Number and a privacy policy link. PPC Land reports this happens before those businesses can receive messages, and a partner review takes three to four working days. An EIN is a US tax ID, so UK and Canadian builders may not see that request.

Which Chat Options Google Supports

Earlier this year, Search Engine Roundtable spotted a place page attributes section in Business Profiles. It let one Japanese user pick a primary chat method.

  • Facebook Messenger.
  • KakaoTalk.
  • LINE.
  • Text message.
  • WhatsApp.

The report also showed a primary tag beside the chosen chat number. Options may vary by country, so check your own profile.

We also covered the WhatsApp button that Google started showing in local panels. Read our guide to the Google WhatsApp button for builders for the background.

Check Your Profile Today

  1. Search for your business name on Google, and look at the buttons in your panel.
  2. Open your profile and look for any new messaging or chat links.
  3. Check your email for a message from Google about changes to your profile.
  4. Find out who owns the linked Facebook Page. Make sure you control it.
  5. Send yourself a test message from a personal phone.
  6. Note how long the reply takes, and who sees it first.

Also check suggested edits. Google gives you four days to respond, so our guide to Google Business Profile changes is worth a read.

Pick One Primary Channel

Too many channels create gaps. A message sent to a page nobody checks looks worse than no button at all. So choose one main channel, and add a second only if you can cover it.

  • Choose the channel you already check daily. That is usually your best option.
  • Use a business account, not a personal one. Clients can see the name and number.
  • Agree who replies. One person should own each channel during working hours.
  • Remove channels you cannot monitor. An unwatched inbox costs enquiries.

Set Reply Rules Before You Switch On

Speed matters most. A message that waits two days can cost you the job. Our guide to how fast to reply to enquiries explains a realistic standard.

  • Send an automatic reply within a minute.
  • Reply personally within one hour in working hours.
  • Answer evening messages by 9am the next day.
  • Offer two call times, because calls close more jobs than long threads.
  • Set an away message, so clients know when to expect an answer.

Keep your replies short and friendly. Ask for the project type and the location, then move to a call.

Privacy and Safety

Messaging brings new risks, so plan for them.

  • Never share a private number in a profile. Everyone can see it.
  • Do not send bank details or ID documents in a chat.
  • Be careful with messages that push you to click unknown links.
  • Keep a record of client chats, because they can settle disputes later.

Also remember that Google may call, text or message your verified number to confirm business details. So keep that number monitored.

Keep Your Website in the Mix

A profile button is only one entry point. Your website still needs its own contact options on every page. So keep a click-to-call button, a short form and a messaging button.

Our guide to mobile-first construction website design shows how to place them for thumbs on a phone. Also track which channel brings enquiries, because the best channel can change over time. For more on tracking, see our post on Google Business Home and new reports.

Frequently Asked Questions

The report does not say why. Google is emailing businesses to say it adds the links automatically, so check your email and your profile.

An m.me link is a short URL from Meta. It opens a direct chat with a Facebook Page in Messenger.

Which messaging channel should a builder choose?

Choose the channel you already check every day, and use a business account. Add a second channel only if you can reply to it quickly.

Does the EIN request apply to UK builders?

An EIN is a US tax ID, so the request affects US businesses. UK and Canadian builders may not see it.
